seemed somewhat less alert than he had bem prior to his

illness last spring but was otherwise unchanged, showed

himself genuinely desirous of bringing about a settlement.

Indeed, both my French 1⁄2lleague and I fels that, had it

not been for the presenon of Nr.0. 0. W at the interview,

an agreement would have been renohei thm ani there.

Such suggestions as 0.5, Wu did contribute to the debat

were hardly helpful, One was that if neither neession

desired to reinstate its Folios, the British should take

over the French Police (12 men) and the French should take

over the British (38 men). This proposal meeting with no

response, he renewed the suggestion previously made to us

by the strike agitators, noting under his direction, that

the Police should be formally reinstated fbraa day or

in order to “give face" to the agitators, after which we

should be at liberty to dismiss them without compensation

or deal with them otherwise in sy way we plensed.

In reply we urged that we had our own "face" to con-

sider; that the apparent reinstatement of the Folios foll-

owed by an almost immediate dismissal was a trick which we

would not possibly think of playing on them; and that if m

did, such a course would bring about a thoroughly justi-

fiable autory in the native press and probably also a re-

crudescence of the strike. Eventually it was decided that

the iolins question should be settled on the lines already

laid down, viz., that their resignations should be accept-

ed and that each man should receive from the Council his

pay to July 15th and a gratuity based on length of service

and should be re-employed in some capacity or other by the

Chinese authorities. Dr. Sun directed the ∞missioner of

Foreign Affairs, ir. oo Ping-shoung, to deal with the

matter
